Brief History
Meisei University was inaugurated in 1964 with five departments of Faculty of Physical Sciences and Engineering at the Hino Campus. In the next year, three Departments of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were established with the Department of Economics added the next year.
The parent body of Meisei University is Meisei Gakuen Institute, which has provided a fulfilling educational experience on the primary and secondary levels in Fuchu City, Tokyo, since 1923. Meisei, incidentally, denotes the planet Venus in an ancient reading taken from classical Chinese. In 1967, the University was licensed to start Distance Education with a single Department of Psychology and Pedagogy.
It should be also noted that Meisei University is one of the first higher educational institutions in the country to offer Postgraduate Distance Education.

April 1965 | The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is established. |
April 1967 | The Correspondence Course are established. |
April 1971 | The Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences is established. |
April 1972 | The Graduate School of Physical Sciences and Engineering is established. |
February 1982 | Tokyo Lincoln Center is opened. |
October 1983 | The Research Center for Postwar Educational History of Japan is opened. |
November 1983 | The Information Science Research Center is opened. |
April 1992 | Meisei University opened another new campus in Ome City. The Faculty of Informatics and the Faculty of Japanese Culture are established at Ome campus. |
April 1994 | Shakespeare Hall is opened. |
April 1998 | The Graduate School of Informatics is established. |
April 1999 | The Correspondence Courses in the Graduate School are established. |
April 2001 | The Faculty of Economics is established. |
April 2005 | The School of Art and Design is established. The Department of Mechanical Engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Architecture, the Department of Environmental Systems, the Department of International Studies, the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Information Science are established. |
April 2007 | Hino Campus is renewed. |
