Program in Life Science and Chemistry

■Purpose of the discipline

You are about to get into chemistry when you realise that everything around you is an assembly of molecules or atoms. Life science includes biotechnology and genome and advanced technologies in nanoscience lead to the creation of new materials. These are developed based on chemistry by assessing the nature and reactive character of a material and encouraging a new conjunction of its’ molecular and atomic levels. If formaldehyde, known as a causative agent for sick house syndrome, and toxic dioxins generated from garbage incinerators are created by a miscalculation in chemistry, it is also the role of chemistry to develop a catalyst to neutralize these harmful substances and propose a way of dealing with the problems.
The aim of the program is to foster human resources to apply techniques and knowledge in chemistry and life science to hot topic fields that include medical, environment, biotechnology, information, materials and to contribute to the development of life science and nanoscience utilizing the techniques and knowledge obtained.

In the first year, students start “experimental session” and “project” which are both designed for learning the basics in science and engineering. With “experiments in chemistry and life science”, the curriculums are designed for students to obtain knowledge practically through hands-on experiences through to the final year. We offer 3 course models to enable students to study effectively; 1) life science, 2) molecular science, and 3) teaching qualification. In the course of 1) and 2), students concentrate on each area, and in the course of 3), the structure is well balanced with subjects to pursue their major and requisite subjects to obtain a teaching qualification. Both help students to develop their career pathway. In the graduation thesis, students choose a theme from the cutting-edge areas of bioscience, molecular science or environmental science in accordance with their interest. There is also an opportunity to take part in a joint research project with off-campus organizations. Graduates have obtained jobs in various industries and are playing an important role within them. Many of our students also go to the graduate school, which demonstrates the enriched, specialty education we are providing.
