■Purpose of the discipline

The goal of the Department of Art and Design is to develop human resources who have the capability of thinking deeply in the art and creative expression field and even in daily activities and human relationship in various fields.

First and second year students learn from basics in stages and then third year students choose their major up to two fields from the 11 practical courses; Painting, Visual Design, Product Design, Fashion Design, Landscape Design, Wooden Art, Spatial Art, Formative Design, Textile Design, Ceramics, and Glass. We encourage you to learn necessary things to have a fulfilling life by experiencing creative activities.

1. 11 practical courses covering from art to design
We offer 11 courses; “Painting”, “Wooden Art”, “Spatial Art”, “Visual Design”, “Product Design”, “Formative Design”, “Textile Design”, “Fashion Design”, “Landscape Design”, “Ceramics” and “Glass”. Each course has adequate specialized equipment.

2. Helpful curriculum that enable you to start learning art from scratch
First year students learn basics of modelling and design including “drawing”, “clay modelling”, color construction” and “three-dimensional construction”, and then second year students start learning more expertized fields. This curriculum structure encourages a person who is interested in art and design but has never learned techniques to start learning art and design with ease.

3. Experience-oriented program that nurtures a suggesting skill
One of the futures of our program is that you can explore the most suitable field for you while learning on an experience basis. We provide opportunities to learn a useful skill in society by suggesting a project to a local company and community. Some of these projects are now in progress to commercialize products.

1. Painting
Develop an ability of expression of what you see and feel by paintings including oil painting, watercolour painting and block print

2. Wooden Art
Pursue an expression with “wood” materials using various tools from the Japanese traditional tools to machine tools

3. Spatial Art
Show an unrestricted creative power with a great value of uniqueness by not exclusive to painting, sculpture and media art

4. Visual Design
Cultivate sensibility, a creative ability and a basic ability of modelling, and learn digital representation. Then dig deep into an expertized field including CI, posters and editorial.

5. Product Design
Learn a wide range of product design techniques based on a care towards ecology and universal ideas

6. Formative Design
Comprehensively cultivate abilities of “monozukuri (making)” including modelling theories and techniques, and an ability of understating and problem-solving

7. Textile Design
Learn basic techniques of dyeing and fabric while acquiring knowledge of natural environment and traditional cultures

8. Fashion Design
Refine techniques to turn your image into clothes while exploring materials. Our annual fashion show is a great success!

9. Landscape Design
Learn a high-quality finished landscape design from “private gardens” to urban space or landscaping space

10. Ceramics
Widely learn techniques of forming, decorating and burning. Make daily-used dishes, architectural ceramics and artifacts by each research theme

11. Glass
Meisei University is one of a handful of universities that is equipped with various facilities for glass art including a melting furnace, that enables you to learn most of the necessary techniques of glass forming
